Employee Spotlight – John – Safety Site Specialist

Meet John, one of Price Electric’s People You Can Rely On.

John is a Safety Site Specialist, and his primary responsibility is ensuring safety standards are followed on-site. His day starts by ensuring Pre-Task Planning documents are completed, making sure everyone understands potential hazards, verifying PPE compliance, and confirming permits are signed and in place. He helps with day-to-day site needs, making sure crews have what they need to work safely and efficiently.

In his spare time, he enjoys outdoor activities such as hiking, kayaking, tent camping, and playing board games- anything that allows me to interact with my family. We love kayaking on the Des Moines River and are planning a camping/kayaking trip down Beaver Creek in Des Moines.

What’s the best thing about your job?

The opportunity to learn something new every day. There’s always room to grow in this industry, and that’s something I really appreciate.

What is the best place you have ever traveled to and why?

One of the best places I have ever traveled to is Southern Utah because it offers so many activities, making it an outdoor paradise. We even went sand sledding, which was an interesting experience! It was the first time I ever saw the Milky Way when my kids and I visited Zion National Park. We saw the galaxy for the first time while stargazing. We spread out some blankets in a field.

In a couple of words, can you describe Price Electric?

I appreciate the family atmosphere at Price Electric and have made great connections.

Tell us three things that most people don’t know about you.

  1. I’m a huge nerd: I love Dungeons and Dragons, card games, and board games. My family enjoys playing Wyrmspan together. We are a big board game family and prefer face-to-face games over video games.
  2. I have six kids.
  3. I consider myself an introvert. I dislike big crowds and have a strong fear of flying. Growing up, I was around helicopters and small aircraft since my dad took me on test flights, but I’m still terrified of flying.

Which Price Electric Core Value do you relate to the most?

“Work Hard, Play Hard.” We put in the effort and take pride in what we do, but we also know how to enjoy ourselves and build relationships along the way. At the Des Moines location, we have fun activities like attending baseball games and hosting golf outings, among other events.

Where would you go for a dream vacation?

Traveling to Japan. I took Japanese in high school and have always been fascinated by the culture. Once my youngest son graduates, that’s where I’d love to go.

What is Your Favorite meal:

My favorite meal is my mom’s stew. It may seem simple, just meat, potatoes, and carrots, but she uses special seasonings that make it absolutely delicious. I think part of the appeal is the nostalgia it brings me.

What five words would you use for someone considering a career with Price Electric?

No time like the present.

Why Price Electric?

It’s the people. The relationships I’ve built, the support from management, the flexibility, and the culture of working hard while enjoying life outside of work are what keep me here. Over the last five years, Price Electric has become more than a workplace—it’s become a community.

What has been one of your proudest moments working at Price Electric?

Watching my son join Price Electric has been incredibly rewarding. He excelled in his electrical training program and has already achieved some impressive accomplishments. Knowing he’s beginning his career with a company I trust is a great feeling as a parent.

Do you have a favorite quote, personal mantra, or motto?

“Those who mind don’t matter, and those who matter don’t mind.” – Dr. Seuss.

What skill should everyone learn?

Communication is a skill that everyone should learn, and I highly value it because so many problems can be solved when people communicate effectively.

What has your career growth looked like at Price Electric?

Price Electric has given me opportunities every step of the way. After completing my apprenticeship, I became a lead on several projects. Earlier this year, I moved from Des Moines to Cedar Rapids for data center work and eventually transitioned into the safety department. Looking back, it’s been a rewarding journey.

What motivates you every day?

I have a strong work ethic that was instilled in me by my father. One of my biggest pet peeves is laziness. When motivated people surround you, it pushes you to be better yourself.

What was your first big concert?

Mine was BJ Thomas at the free stage of the Iowa State Fair. My parents were eager to see him perform, so they took me along when I was just 10 years old.

What was your best vacation?

Two years ago, we climbed Mount Albert, which is Colorado’s highest mountain. We’re planning to do it again in August. Last time, it was just with our daughters, but this year, the entire family will join us. The mountain is located just outside of Buena Vista. We started our hike at 3 a.m. and didn’t return to our vehicle until 7 p.m.

What factors motivate you to stay at Price Electric?

The people and the culture. The relationships I’ve built here are genuine. Management is supportive, coworkers become friends, and it really feels like a family atmosphere. That’s hard to find.
