Employee Spotlight: Colton – Electrician

Electrical ApprenticeshipMeet Colton, one of our team members at Price Electric. He has been with the company for over six years, working as an Electrician and Service Technician in the Service Department. Colton enjoys helping homeowners find solutions that meet their needs and desires. He travels throughout eastern Iowa daily to troubleshoot issues, remodel, and enhance existing electrical systems. He also works in commercial and industrial settings, troubleshooting and resolving electrical issues.

Colton’s dedication to learning and innovative thinking aligns with Price Electric’s core value—Innovative Thinking. He is committed to mastering new technologies and processes and seeks to tackle challenging tasks efficiently. For Colton, learning is a continuous journey.

Colton enjoys spending time with his friends and family, playing video games, and target shooting at gun ranges. He has a high-energy golden retriever who never chills out.

What is the best thing about your job?

For Colton, the best part of his job is the satisfaction of helping homeowners find practical solutions tailored to their needs. His recommendations, from installing LED strip lighting under cabinets to adding chandeliers, bring a personal touch to kitchen, bathroom, and whole-house remodels.

I particularly enjoy working on custom homes and automation systems, like smart home setups that integrate with smartphones, allowing homeowners to control their lighting easily. We can program shades to lower at specific times of the day to block out sunlight, offering numerous exciting options for homeowners.

I also enjoy adding outlets, even in cases where customers believe extensive drywall removal will be necessary. Finding a minimalistic way to run wiring through the house with minimal drywall damage is always rewarding.

Our services also extend to installations for swimming pools, hot tubs, and more. Additionally, we upgrade old fuse panels to modern switch panels. This involves a service change-out where we replace outdated panels and update meters and mains from the meter to the panel, ensuring that all existing wiring meets current code standards.

Expert Electrical ServicesWhat is your favorite TV Show?

My favorite TV show is 11/22/63. It’s the most excellent TV series of all time. This science fiction thriller is based on Stephen King’s novel 11/22/63 and stars James Franco. “It’s one of the best shows I’ve ever watched.”

Could you tell us three words to describe Price Electric?

Extensive, Reliable, Fun

What has been one of your proudest moments working at Price Electric?

One of Colton’s proudest moments at Price Electric was during a significant custom kitchen remodel. The client’s initial request for new kitchen lighting, which they installed, including under-cabinet strip lighting, was so well-received that the client decided to enhance the lighting throughout the house. As the project expanded, they also added smart switches at each location in the home. The team’s successful handling of all the programming, involving computer work and coding, was a moment of great pride and satisfaction for Colton.

What is the most challenging thing about working at Price Electric?

One of the most challenging aspects of working at Price Electric is being ready to go anywhere immediately. The routine changes daily. We might work at one location for a few weeks or have multiple job sites in one day.

I appreciate it when I can focus on a job for a couple of weeks, allowing me to dive into the work. However, I also enjoy the variety of jumping around and changing scenes. I would enjoy it less if I had to be in the same place daily. The variety keeps things interesting for me.

Licensed Electricians 24 Hour ServiceTell us three things that most people don’t know about you.

  • I can make anything using a pizzazz—those rotating pizza makers. I’ve cooked various foods on it. It’s great for frozen pizzas, but you can also make waffles, pancakes, and other frozen items
  • I can rip-stick like a pro! It’s a unique skateboard you wiggle to move, feeling a bit like surfing. A rip-stick has two narrow decks connected by a torsion bar with a spring.
  • I cannot eat foods that contain creamy white condiments like sour cream, mayonnaise, cottage cheese, and cream cheese. I will not eat a dish if I know these ingredients are included. For example, I know cheesecake is delicious, but I cannot bring myself to eat it because it contains cream cheese.

What are five words for anyone considering an electrical profession with Price Electric?

 You’ll never stop learning.

What is your favorite meal?

My favorite meal is Pancheros steak burritos, served with cilantro lime rice, pinto beans, corn salsa, and medium salsa verde with queso.

What is your family like?

My family is amazing and close-knit; I wouldn’t trade them for anyone. We live in Cedar Rapids, where my parents own a house at one end of the street. My grandparents have their home a few lots down, and they also purchased a house right next to theirs. My brother and I live in that neighboring house, so we’re all in the same neighborhood, with our backyards connecting.

Electrical Service TechnicianHave you had a mentor while working at Price Electric?

While working at Price Electric, I worked closely with a journeyman who mentored and taught me a lot about this field. Over about two years, I learned more about circuitry from him. We collaborated on many custom homes, including projects involving smart homes and automated shades.

What is your biggest pet peeve?

I don’t have a pet peeve. I’m not easily angered or upset because I believe that nothing is significant enough to warrant anger. You can choose to get mad about many things, or you can let them go.

What is on your bucket list?

One wish on my bucket list is to leave the Midwest for a vacation. I’d love to go somewhere with mountains and stay in a log cabin. I would happily spend my days chopping wood in places like Colorado, Montana, Wyoming, Idaho, or the Dakotas.

When are you happiest?

I’m happiest in a swimming pool; I am aquatic. I enjoy floating and going on innertube float trips.

What do you love most about Price Electric?

I love the company culture, especially the events, like the golf outing. I am very loyal to Price Electric.
