The University of Iowa Children’s Hospital Centralized Generator Facility Addition serves as emergency backup power for the Steadfast Children’s Hospital.
This high-profile undertaking involved installing two massive 35,000 lb. generators and additional generator switchgear equipment to ensure uninterrupted power for the new Stead Family Children’s Hospital.
Located over a mile away, these generators are designed to deliver power throughout the hospital in less than 9.2 seconds in the event of an outage.
Our team faced significant challenges, including routing conduits through occupied patient areas and maneuvering large equipment through the hospital’s basements. By utilizing innovative 3D design and spatial logistics technology, we ensured precise placement and minimized disruptions to hospital operations.
One of the project’s highlights was constructing a new underground duct bank along For the Kids Way, the hospital’s main thoroughfare. This required meticulous traffic control and coordination with existing utilities to maintain continuous traffic flow.
Additionally, we installed over a mile of fiber optic cabling, connecting the new generator facility to the existing hospital infrastructure.
Our commitment to quality and precision and our ability to adapt and innovate allowed us to complete this project on time and within budget, ensuring the hospital’s critical operations remained unaffected.
