BIM Technician, Elsa Lewis, September Employee Spotlight

Meet Elsa Lewis, one of Price Electric’s People You Can Rely On. Elsa Lewis is a BIM (Building Information Modeling) Technician at Price Electric. A BIM technician creates three-dimensional representations of construction projects. After graduating from high school at age 15, she started working at Price Electric. Elsa’s favorite project so far has been the Linn Mar School project. It was her first project, and she modeled much of the architecture and the electrical. “Innovative Thinking” is Elsa’s favorite Price Electric core value because she likes a challenge, problem-solving, and creating the best, most effective product and outcome in the field.

What is the best part of your job?

I’ve always liked computers, drawing, and making things look nice. My job combines them all. I love working with Revit, problem-solving, and making different project sheets look nice and organized.

Did anyone in your family influence your career choice?

Dan Johnson, my uncle and a current Price Electric employee, influenced my career choice. He always shared information about his job with me and my cousins and told us that they needed people in this field. He encouraged us, saying, ” You should learn this!”

What advice do you have for someone considering a career with Price Electric in 5 words or less?

Be willing to learn. Try to have a troubleshooting type of mindset.

Where is the best place that you have traveled to?

In 2019, my family and I went to Florida for two weeks. We went to the aquarium and swam with sharks—that was fun! We rented a house right next to the beach with a swimming pool. It was awesome when I hung out with my family and swam all week.

What do you like to do in your spare time?

I like playing video games, drawing people, and playing instruments. I have a keyboard, electronic drum set, bass guitar, and ukulele. I also enjoy studying the Bible and sharing as a volunteer minister and Jehovah’s Witness. Learning on the job at Price Electric has given me skills I use as a volunteer, such as building projects.

What are some things about you that would surprise us?

I’m learning Japanese and would like to travel to Japan. My dad, Josh Lewis, was an electrician who worked at Price Electric once.

What has been one of your proudest moments working at Price Electric?

There have been a lot of times when I’ve been proud of what I’ve done because things seem hard at first. It’s always a nice feeling to learn or accomplish something completely new. One proud moment that comes to mind is when I created my first Revit family. Revit families are a template for items you can place in a 3D model. For example, you don’t have to design, draw, and place information for the whole panel when placing a panel. We have an already existing family, or template, that has the base shape in there, and then we edit or change the parameters and information. So, when I made a new family, it was unlike anything I had done in Revit. I was very proud of myself when I completed it.

What was the first big concert you went to?

I went with some friends to see Fall Out Boy with 21 Pilots.

Could you describe some of the work that you do at Price Electric?

I use programs (Revit, AutoCAD, and others) to 3D-model and draft sheets and gather information that will be useful in the field or useful to compile before implementing it into the field. Some examples are modeling in panels and their information, transformers, conduit runs, lights, and other electrical features.

What is your favorite thing at Price Electric?

Everyone is friendly and chill.

She’s always enthusiastic about work, telling me new projects she’s working on and their challenges and expressing how much they excite her. She has a real passion and pride for her work and it shows. Proud of you! 🙂
